A Productive Winter Day in the Garden, Family Time, and Staying True to My Daily Mission
There is something deeply relaxing about spending time in the garden. Even on an ordinary day, clearing pathways, pruning trees, and preparing for the seasons ahead brings a sense of peace that is difficult to find elsewhere.

My first task was to reclaim one of the garden walkways by trimming back overgrown branches. It is amazing how much more inviting a garden feels once the paths are clear and accessible again.
I also spent time looking after my blue oyster mushroom bed. To help create the ideal growing conditions, I covered the bed with extra material to retain warmth, encourage moisture through condensation, and still allow enough airflow. My hope is that these conditions will encourage the mushroom mycelium to colonise the growing medium more effectively over the coming weeks.
While working in this area, I continued tidying another section of the garden and considered pruning one of the larger olive trees. By removing one of the main central trunks, I hope to encourage healthy new shoots and shape the tree for future growth.
As the morning progressed, the transformation became noticeable. The once cluttered corner was beginning to look organised again, proving that even small jobs completed one at a time can make a significant difference.
Rather than letting old materials go to waste, I found an unused garden barrier and decided to repurpose it into a composting area. It will become a place for leaves, small branches, and garden trimmings to decompose naturally, enriching the soil over time. I also have some pink oyster mushroom spawn remaining, so I plan to establish another mushroom bed nearby and make full use of the available space.
Looking ahead to spring and summer, I began planning another section of the garden that has been sitting unused since last year’s tomato crop. After checking the soil, I was pleased to discover it remains soft, rich, and full of life. Along this wall I intend to plant three or four zucchini plants, as previous crops have performed exceptionally well in similar conditions.
I’m also considering adding climbing flowers to this area. With a simple trellis or a few sturdy branches for support, the wall could become both productive and visually appealing throughout the warmer months. In the meantime, the compost area will continue building fertility, preparing the soil for another growing season.
By the afternoon, the garden looked noticeably cleaner. There is still more work ahead, including pressure washing the paved areas to reveal the original surface beneath years of accumulated dirt, but the progress made today was rewarding.
The day wasn’t only about gardening. We also enjoyed some valuable family time after having two of our nephews stay overnight. In the morning, we took all the boys to feed the sheep near our home before spending time together at the local park. Later, while the children played with friends, I returned to the garden to continue working.

As evening arrived, we gathered around the fire pit. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, happily burning sticks and watching the flames dance. The youngest was especially excited, proudly waving his stick while repeatedly shouting, “Fire! Fire!” Moments like these remind me that simple family experiences often become the most memorable ones.
The only disappointment was the weather. Thick cloud covered the sky, and I had hoped to spend some time stargazing beneath the full moon. Even so, I remained hopeful that the clouds might clear later in the evening.
As the day came to an end, I also reflected on another commitment that has become an important part of my life.
Following what I believe was a vision of Yeshua Jesus Christ last year, I made a personal commitment to honour Him through consistency and discipline. One way I do this is by making sure I exercise every day, whether that means walking, jogging, cycling, or simply staying active. It serves as a daily reminder of His sacrifice and the gratitude I feel for His grace.
Although I nearly forgot my walk today, I made sure to complete it before the day ended. Last year I missed only a handful of days, and this year I hope to remain just as consistent.
I’m also rebuilding my running fitness. My current goal is to comfortably complete five kilometres in around thirty minutes, maintaining a steady six-minute-per-kilometre pace without excessive fatigue. Achieving that level of endurance would give me confidence that my cardiovascular health is continuing to improve.
I managed two 5-kilometre runs last week, but they were challenging. After several days without running, today’s goal was simply to complete a steady 2-kilometre jog. It wasn’t easy—I began to struggle after the first kilometre and found the second kilometre equally demanding—but I finished what I had set out to do.
Some days aren’t about setting personal records. They’re about showing up, completing the work, and continuing to move forward.
Whether it’s building healthier soil, preparing another mushroom bed, spending quality time with family, or simply putting one foot in front of the other on a run, every small step contributes to something greater over time.
